Hello CSA Members!
Even though I’ve been outside all day, it’s 8:52pm and I’m still having trouble dragging myself inside to write the newsletter. It’s the golden hour outside, and it’s my favorite time of the day.
It doesn’t help that I’m still at a bit of a loss on what to talk about these days as well. I’m a firm believer that humans are a part of nature, and we have this amazing privilege of inhabiting a planet as beautiful as Earth. And while it’s easy to talk about how we could live more sustainably and more equitably, we just seem to not be able to get it together as a species. I don’t know if it’s just the human condition, our focus on self interest, or just our inability to think long term, but it seems I’ve spent much of my adult life feeling like we could do much better. Greed and short term thinking just seems to lurk everywhere…it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the environment, a more nutritious food system, racial equity, wealth disparity…you name it, and greed is the root cause. At this point everyone is talking, and no one seems to be listening. And the 24-hour news cycle is not helping. And so I find myself at a loss for words.
Like any great adventure, there are times you push on into a headwind, and other times when you decide seeking shelter is a more sound course of action. And at the moment, I find myself stepping back and focusing on the farm. Team Humanity has me frustrated, and so I’m playing for Team Nature this season. So, in following with my mood, I decided I would just take some photos of the farm this evening so you can all see what’s going on out there. And Rebecca is shopping for another puppy.
This weeks share has some beautiful broccoli heads or brocollini, so if you haven’t sautéed any of them yet with garlic scapes, I think you should give it a shot. My meals lately have consisted of grated carrot with apple cider vinegar, olive oil and sea salt, and lots of sautéed broccoli and cauliflower. And for the partial shares, the green cabbages this spring are very sweet. Slice them as thin as you can and do an oil and vinegar style coleslaw….it’s super refreshing on a hot day.
Well, time to go hydrate! We’ll see you at CSA pickup!
