Hello CSA members!

The dog days of summer are here for sure!  It’s been quite the week of warm weather.  With all this moisture moving in, I’m going out on a limb and saying last night was one of, if not the warmest night I’ve ever experienced in my 16 years in Montana (then again, I have trouble remembering things these days).  I’d be surprised if it dipped below 60 degrees at the farm.  I’m sure all the folks putting up hay have been overjoyed by this warm spell.

The farm is really in full swing and the plants are responding to the heat.  We picked over a hundred pounds of snap peas today, and the summer squash needs picking every day at this point.  The tomato plants are chest high and the healthiest we’ve every had, and all the broccoli is ready at once.  The basil looks awesome, and even s0me eggplant are starting to ripen.  After such a seemingly long drawn out spring, it seems like summer is trying to exhaust itself as quickly as possible. However, if you need a reminder of how recent summer’s arrival was, just go jump into any fork of the Flathead river….man, that water is still cold.

Given that the peas and the broccoli have really produced this week, your servings of each will be on the healthy side this week.  There is also a larger portion of basil, the first of the summer squash, some loose leaf lettuce mix, and a green cabbage.

The rhythm on the farm has turned from planting and worrying if things will grow, to weeding, watering, trellising, and worrying about what to do with all this food 🙂

We make it a point to cut our broccoli heads short so that there isn’t a bunch of stem included, however, in recent years the demand for broccoli stems seems to be on the rise.  Rebecca found this recipe as a case in point.  Hope you’re enjoying the heat, or at least finding good ways to cope with it….see you at CSA Distribution!
