Hello CSA members!
It’s the 16th week of this 20 week journey through the Montana growing season, and what a season it’s been. I’m guessing when all is said and done, 2015 will go down as one of the driest and warmest summers on record for the Flathead Valley, as the forest fire smoke and the brown pastures seems to attest. As a society, I think we tend to over-simplify this idea of a changing and warming climate, as if it will just result in a gradual increase in temperature over time. But the reality seems to be much more volatile, extreme, and unpredictable. In our 8 years of farming, I think Rebecca and I have experienced 6 “100-year events”. Record hot, record cold, record flooding, record dry, record hail, and record wind events….you name it, we’ve seen it. All these gray hairs aren’t just age related 🙂 So as we bring in the harvest this season, there is a great sense of satisfaction and relief that we have made it through yet another trying year with a bountiful harvest.
Fall is in the air, and it’s hard to believe it’s only the last day of August. For a while there, I thought we were going to have an endless summer, but the summer that started early seems to be ending early as well. Having cool, clean air to breathe has been a welcome respite from the past few weeks. We’ve been busy harvesting winter squash and onions to cure in the greenhouse, and the cold nights seem to imply that fall is on the way. The first flock of geese flew over the fields this morning, further corroborating this idea.
There is still an abundance of pumpkins on the farm, so if you didn’t get a chance to come get a free one last week, this Friday from 3 to 6 is your last chance.
Your share this week is a blend of summer treats, such as tomatoes, peppers, and beans, combined with the root crops of fall, including potatoes, carrots, onions, and garlic. It is a time of transition on the farm, as the fields seem to shrink, yet the harvest seems to get bigger every week. We hope you are enjoying the fresh air and the views, and we will see you at CSA pickup!
