Hello CSA members!
Talk about the return of spring! Wow, it’s wet out there. Thank goodness we’re still harvesting most of our crops from the high tunnels and hoop houses, which keeps us some what out of the muck, because navigating through the fields right now is getting real tricky. Any one want to come kneel in our paths and weed head lettuce?
AS you can see, farming using the practice of raised beds has many benefits, moisture management being a key one. Aside from the tremendous amount of moisture we’ve received in the past few days, all the crops out in the fields are really looking good under their covers. It’s been a very pleasant spring to be a farmer in Montana up until this point, but it seems each year there is some extreme event that leaves us pondering why nature is having an increasingly difficult time with moderation.
While we’re getting ready to start planting the tomatoes next week, it is still very much spring and the season of greens. A new arrival to the share this week is Red Russian Kale., which we find to be one of the better flavored kales out there. Kale can be eaten raw, juiced, but I think the best is lightly cooked. If you’re stuck inside with all the rain and have some time to get fancy, try out these curried kale cakes. And I recognize that kale chips are so last year, but if you haven’t tried them, here’s a recipe. Lastly, by now you should all know my affinity for pesto. Since Basil is still in the distant future, try kale pesto (or your radish greens for that matter) as a refreshing spring substitute.
Just a note on CSA pickup in Whitefish this week…. this is the last week that Whitefish will have the special pickup from 5pm to 6:30pm at Depot Park….starting next week the Whitefish Farmers Market will be in full swing, and you will be able to pick up your shares over the entire market (5-7:30).
Thanks again for supporting local agriculture, and we hope you are enjoying the fresh vegetables!
